After his victory at the Battle of Hastings, William's forces quickly took control of the south of England. William the Conqueror was crowned King of England in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066. Over the next three years he resisted many English rebellions before he went on to conquer Scotland and Wales. He ordered eight commissioners to compile the Domesday Book, this was a record of each parish in England. William made sure that he kept power by building castles at important places throughout the land, using the latest in castle-building technology. The Tower of London and Windsor Castle were both started during William's reign. He introduced the feudal system, that is where his followers were given estates to allow them control of the local population. Many churches and manor houses survive from the Normans and many words that we use in our language are from Norman French.
