Parachute Activities

Moving the Tent

The children sit in a circle in the parachute tent (see parachute tent activity).

There are various ways in which the children can try and move the parachute tent.

Firstly they can crawl around the edge of the parachute, making sure that the material of the parachute stays firmly under their knees.

Secondly the children can sit on the edge of the inner parachute tent, holding the edge of the material with their hands and at the same time move their feet. The teacher can direct the children to move their feet in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction and therefore make the parachute tent rotate. The teacher could also direct the children to move the parachute tent across the ground by the children co-operating, some pushing their feet backwards and some children pulling their feet forwards etc.

Thirdly the children could lie upside down with their backs on the edge of the parachute tent and their legs up the side of the parachute and gently kick their legs and make the parachute 'bubble' in and out.

Fourthly the children can watch the parachute tent slowly collapse by them lying down as soon as the parachute tent has been formed. The parachute tent will fall gently on top of the them. The tent can always be formed by going outside and starting again.
