This activity encourages children to look closely at dialogue and decide whether it is a statement, exclamation or a question.

Dialogue

Dialogue is the proper name for characters talking in a story. We know when there is dialogue as there will be speech marks around what they say.

Dialogue can be put into different categories depending on what is being said and the punctuation being used.

Characters in stories can make statements, questions or exclamations.

Example of a Statement

John turned to Paul and said, “I think we should go home, it’s getting late.”

The dialogue is from John and he is making a statement because he is declaring what he feels.

Example of a Question

Paul turned to John and said, “What time is it?”

The dialogue is from Paul and he is asking a question because there is a question mark (?) and he needs a reply.

Example of an Exclamation

“But it’s still too early to leave, I’m having a great time!” shouted Paul loudly.

The dialogue is from Paul and he is making an exclamation because he is speaking forcefully and loudly and there is an exclamation mark (!).

Read these pieces of dialogue below and decide whether each is a statement, question or exclamation.

1) “I would like to go to the park today.”

2) “What is your name?”

3) “No, there is no way I’m climbing that!”

4) “It is very hot outside today.”

5) “Do you have any pets at your house?”

6) “I’m not leaving now!”

7) “I’ve got ham sandwiches for lunch today.”

8) “Who is picking you up from school today?”

9) “Go away I don’t want to see you!”

10) “I’m reading a great story at the moment.”
